While listening to Pastor Bolaji Idowu’s message at the beginning of the Year, one thing stuck with me; 2023 is the Year of the Bold. I made a note on my reading list for the year to read a book on Courage. I’m glad I chose Malcolm Gladwell’s David and Goliath.

I completed the last 240 pages of this book in one day… Once I picked it up, I could not drop it. “David and Goliath” is a book that explores the concept of advantage and disadvantage, and how people can overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles using rich and thought-provoking short stories.

Here are some key takeaways from the book:

Advantages can be disadvantages

The book argues that advantages, such as wealth or physical strength, can sometimes be a disadvantage, as they can make people complacent and unprepared for challenges.

Disadvantages can be advantages

People who face disadvantages often develop skills and abilities that can be used to their advantage. For example, people who are dyslexic may become better at problem-solving and creative thinking.

Underdogs are not as weak as you think

The book highlights the power of the underdog, and how people who are underestimated or disadvantaged can use this to their advantage. David defeating Goliath is used as an example.

Your adversity is a secret weapon

The book suggests that adversity can be a catalyst for personal growth and development. People who face challenges and obstacles may develop resilience, creativity, and problem-solving skills.

Overall, “David and Goliath” encourages readers to think differently about advantage and disadvantage, and to see the potential in adversity. The book provides examples of people who have overcome seemingly impossible odds and achieved great success, and encourages readers to do the same.
